私たちがこの幼稚園を始めたのは、自分たちの子供の教育に対して、別の選択肢という
可能性を望んだからです。現在の日本、または、私の母国であるイギリスやアメリカの一般的な教育システムが、最良の選択なのだろうか。他にも何かできるのだろうか。を考えました。
同じように幼児教育について情報を集めたり、調べたりされているご家庭が他にもあると思っています。日本の大都市では教育の選択肢が豊富にありますが、富山のような地方ではそうではありません。それを変えたいと思っています。
戦後、日本に多く取り入れられたアメリカのシステムは、20世紀初頭に産業経済のための労働者を育成するために作られました。これらの労働者は、工場で指示に従って働くために基本的な読み書きや計算のスキルが必要とされました。
それから100年後、21世紀には、就職市場に参入する人々に異なる課題が投げかけられています。自動化、AI、人口減少により、将来必要とされるスキルを予測するのは困難です。そうは言っても、私たちはある程度予測することができます。
私たちの核となる教育理念は、「自分でできるように手伝ってください。」という一言に集約されます。教師はガイド・導く人として子どものために環境を整え、自分を整え、子どもを援助します。子供たちの自然な好奇心を育てて導くことで、彼らが独立した学習者となり、問題解決、創造的解決策を見つける能力、自発的かつ自信を持ちながら行動する力を養うことができると信じています。また、自身のスキルを駆使して課題を克服し、自分の行動に責任を持つことで、将来の困難にも対応できる強靭さを身につけると信じています。
雇用者からよく聞かれるのは、従業員が何をどうすればよいかと指示され続けないと自分で考えたり行動したりできないということです。若者の多くが就職市場に出ず、最初の障害で仕事を辞めてしまうことが増えています。私たちはそれに対抗する試みを提供したいと思います。
ただ、卒業後、日本の教育システムへ進路を進めた際、全く違う方向から参加させるつもりはありません。私たちの小学校カリキュラムは現在開発中で、文部科学省のガイドラインに従います。私たちの子供たちが他の小学校と同様に標準化テストに合格できるように目指しています。私たちの小学校の違いは、カリキュラムを提供する際に子供中心のモンテッソーリアプローチをとり、暗記よりも生徒の自発的な学びに重点を置くことです。
通常の小学校とは異なる点として、道徳と日本語の授業を除き、授業は英語で行います。このカリキュラムを提供するために私たちが協力している専門家は、ロシアやモロッコの国際学校で小学校のカリキュラムとモンテッソーリの原則を融合させた実績のある方です。
2026年4月、高岡市に私たちの小学校に最初の生徒を迎え入れる予定です。

Announcement
We started our nursery because we wanted a different choice for our own children’s education. We believe the current education system in this country, as well as in the UK and US is not the only or perhaps even best option to equip our children for the challenges of the very near future. We believe there are other families who may have the same view as us. Educational options are abundant in larger cities in Japan, but this is not the case in more rural areas, like Toyama. We would like to change that.
The US system, which post-war Japan implemented in large parts, was created at the beginning of the 20th century to help produce and educate workers for the industrial economy. These workers needed basic literacy and numeracy skills in order to follow instructions and work in factories.
100 years later, the 21st century presents different challenges for those who will be entering the job market. Automation, AI, a decreasing population make predicting what skills will be needed difficult. We can, however, make an educated guess.
One of the core tenets of our educational philosophy can be summed up in the phrase ‘help me to do it myself’. We believe nurturing and directing children’s natural curiosity will help them to become independent learners and in turn learn to solve problems, find creative solutions and above all be self-motivated and self-confident in a society where these attributes are not as common as they were in our young people. We also believe that through overcoming challenges on their own and having some ownership over their education they will become more resilient and able to deal with challenges they may face in the future.
A common refrain from employers is that their employees are unable to think and act on their own without constantly being told what to do and how to do it. Young people are increasingly not entering the job market or quitting at the first obstacle. We would like to try and provide an antidote to that.
This is not to say that we should create a bubble around our students that will leave them incapable of joining the Japanese education system later, if they so wish. Our elementary school curriculum is currently in development and will follow MEXT guidelines. We aim for our children to be able to pass standardized tests just like at any other elementary school. The difference with our elementary school will be that we will take a child-centered Montessori approach to delivering the curriculum with less focus on memorization and more focus on proactive learning by our students. English proficiency will be based on the UK national curriculum.
Another aspect that will be different from a regular elementary school is that aside from morality and Japanese lessons, the school day will be conducted in English.
The professional that we are working with to deliver this curriculum has already meshed national curriculums with Montessori principals successfully at international schools in Russia and Morocco.
We intend to welcome the first students to our elementary school in April of 2026.
We have talked with Takaoka city about our project and they have been very generous with their time and advice. Mayor Kakuda is also cheering us on.
